View Table of ContentsMy son tends to lose interest in chapter books but this one has kept his attention every night, with him asking for more than one chapter. When I look back and think of my son developing a love for chapter books and moving beyond beginning readers, I will be able to point at this book as the turning point. I am thrilled to be able to share one of my favorite authors with him and have him enjoy her work as much as I do.
“Rasmus” arrived on one of the many snow days when we weren’t yet well enough to go out, but were all completely done with lounging on the couch, staring at the walls. I had completely forgotten that the book existed, and as soon as I opened it I had this flood of memories… A teacher read it aloud to my second grade class, and I just completely fell in love. I remember daydreaming about life on the open road, catching robbers, eating brown bread and butterscotch... It was just the perfect thing. My son and I have been taking turns reading out loud from it, and now he is having the very same daydreams (although he promises not to actually run away from home!)
What a fun story! Rasmus has grown up in an orphanage for as long as he can remember. He runs away one night to search for a mother and father of his own, and ends up finding a unique friendship with a tramp. I will be passing this fun story on to a friend or family - but I have to decide who carefully so that it gets shared with someone worthy who will actually read it! This one doesn't need to sit on shelves gathering dust! Thanks Handlebar for the opportunity to read and review another great book.
